Dan McCrary

Oct. 2, 1934 - Oct. 20, 2013

Dan McCrary, born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, passed away on October 20, 2013 from complications of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or "Lou Gehrig's" Disease. He was preceded in death by his Father, Jesse Walker McCrary and his Mother, Mildred McDonald McCrary. 

He was a 1952 graduate of University Military School at Mobile. At that time he received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelors of Science in Engineering. He went on to serve over 22 years with the US Army as a Field Artillery Officer. During his career in the Army, he served tours of duty in Korea, Vietnam and Europe, as well as assignments with 101st Airborne Division, 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile), 82nd Airborne Division, XVIII Airborne Corps and Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe. While stationed at the University of Georgia as the Professor of Military Science, Danny achieved a Masters and Doctorate in Education. Some of Danny's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Air Medal, Master Parachutes Badge, Army Ranger Tab and Vietnamese Airborne Wings. 

 

He was a member of the Rotary International, the Ancient Order of Artillerists, and the Society of American Military Engineers. After retiring in 1979, Danny went on to work in Facilities Management for Augusta College, Virginia Commonwealth University, Washington University and the St. Louis Zoo. In 2000, Danny retired from St Charles County and returned to his hometown of Mobile, AL. Danny was a lifetime member of the Dauphin Way Baptist Church but worshiped with the Springhill Baptist Church for many years. He was an active member of the Rotary Club International and received the Paul Harris Fellow Award for his lifetime service. 

 

Danny passed away with the dignity and grace of a soldier. He epitomized the values taught to him by his parents and years at West Point, "Duty, Honor and Country". He is now a proud member of the Long Gray Line and follows the many heroes before him. "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away" - General Douglas MacArthur.
