Cadet Mess in 1958
Portico of old Entrance
The Cadet Mess is responsible for feeding the Corps of Cadets, and the entire Corps eats breakfast and lunch at the same time in less than 25 minutes. Cadets are seated at ten-person tables and are served hot meals family style. The mess hall is decorated with various military and historic artifacts dating back to the Revolutionary War.
Historical Mural
The large mural in the southwest wing depicts the history of the weapons of warfare used in the twenty most decisive battles in history as visualized by the artist, Mr. T. Loftin Johnson. The mural was commissioned as a Federal Art Project under the Works Progress Administration. When completed in 1936, it was one of the largest unbroken interior paintings in the world, with an overall surface of 2,450 square feet; it is 70 long and 35 feet high.
It depicts 20 great historical battles, arranged in historical sequence, that were decisive in charting the course of civilization. Military dress and weapons are authentic. The arms history begins with the bow and arrow used by Cyrus at Babylon through the use of aircraft and the use of the 14 inch Howitzer in World War I.
The mural was accepted on behalf of the United States Military Academy by General John J. Pershing in 1936 as part of graduation ceremonies.
